A parade within a parade at the 2018 OutReach Pride Parade in Madison, WI.
Because of their message and stance on police presence in schools and at the prode parade, I felt it important to give the ‘Community Pride: No Cops at Pride!’ group a separate space.
The ‘Community Pride’ entry, hosted by Madison Degenderettes and International Socialist Organization – Madison, bore a stronger message in opposing the presence of the Madison Police Department in the parade. OutReach, the main orginizer of the pride parade, said it would be okay to have members of the police be part of the parade, which conflicts with the views of others.
While this creates a divide in the community, the ‘Community Pride: No Cops at Pride!’ entry is a much needed voice to bring an important view to the conversation about whose side are the police on and who do they really support.
